I am licensed in another state, how do I transfer that license to Alabama?

To transfer a license to Alabama, you must hold a current license in another state.  First, you must request a certification of licensure from the state where you are currently licensed to be sent to our board.  The certification must be sent directly from your current state to our board.  Then, complete the Application for Reciprocity to Alabama.

The application can not be processed until the certification of licensure is received from your current state.  The application fee is a non-refundable fee of $100.   You will be notified if you are required to take the practical examination, or both the written and practical examinations.  There is an additional fee of $75 for the written examination, and $130 for the practical examination.

Code of Alabama, 1975, § 31-1-6 was enacted by the Alabama Legislature to provide special consideration for spouses of active duty military transferring from out of state to Alabama.   Upon meeting the requirements outlined on the Application for Reciprocity and the Military Spouse Fee Waiver Application, these applicants will be granted the appropriate expedited reciprocal license.

You must make a written request for the board to send a letter of certification to the state to which you are moving. You may print out and complete the License Certification Request form or use the link above to complete the license certification request online.. You must include a copy of your current Alabama License, your Social Security card and current Driver’s License with your request. There is a fee of $25.00 (money order or cashier's check only) per Certification requested.

How do I transfer my license from another country to Alabama?

You may be eligible to transfer a license to Alabama if the country or territory you are transferring from has education requirements substantially equivalent to Alabama license requirements.  

You will need to do the following:

1. Find a foreign credential evaluator that is a member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators. This entity will evaluate your credentials. At a minimum, the foreign credential evaluator will need your credentials including:

  • Any diplomas, certificates, or degrees that you have earned
  • A detailed course-by-course transcript showing the hours in each course. A general transcript is not acceptable.

2. Request that the foreign credential evaluator send two certified evaluation reports:

  • One for your records
  • One sealed in an un-opened envelope to be submitted to ABOCB.

3. ABOCB will determine if:

  • You have met the minimum education hours, and
    You must pass an Alabama written exam and an Alabama practical exam

OR

  • You will be required to take additional educational hours or obtain additional training through an apprenticeship, and
    You must pass an Alabama written exam and an Alabama practical exam.
     

A non-refundable fee of $175 must be included with the application payable to ABOCB, in the form of money order or cashier’s check.  Personal checks are not accepted.  This fee includes the written exam fee.  Once your application is processed, you will receive a Pending Exam Permit.  This Permit is good for six (6) months and cannot be extended.  Once you receive this permit, you may begin working.  You will also receive information concerning how to schedule your exam, which is a computer-based exam.

Once you have successfully completed the written exam, you will send a money order or cashier’s check for $130.00 for the practical exam, which is a hands-on exam.  Once you have successfully completed the practical exam, you will receive your license within 2-4 weeks.

Documents submitted with your application will not be returned.  Keep a copy of your completed application, all attachments, and your money order or cashier’s check.
